Mel wanted to sleep until she had to drag her butt out of bed for the night’s classes, but unfortunately, she had things to do. Her mood had been practically giddy when she and Logan, back in his human form, had parted with kisses, hugs, and whispered, “Sweet dreams” only to crumble once she’d returned to her room and remembered that she still had to have words with her mother. She may have been brave enough to face a giant of a bear, but this was a whole other ball game and she was dreading it.

Maybe she should take a nap first?

Berating herself for stalling, she yanked her phone out, only to grin when she saw the picture she’d taken earlier that she’d since set as her wallpaper. Her smile was wide and slightly goofy while Logan’s eyes were closed and his mouth a little open like he too was attempting to smile. She loved it, and deciding that the image was sure to cheer her up after the dreadful task ahead, she called her mother.

Lanie Harper’s voice sounded sleepy when she answered and Mel silently cursed. “Did I wake you?”

“No, no,” some fumbling sounds. “I’m awake.”

“You don’t sound awake. Don’t you have to work today?”

“Hm? Oh, yeah. Just running a little late is all.”

Mel’s lips pinched in a grimace. She’d never get anything coherent out of her mother if she was still half asleep. “Do you want me to call you later?”

Silence met that question and Mel wondered if her mother had fallen back to sleep. “Ma?”

A snort and snuffling sound was followed by, “Hm? What?”

With a sigh of defeat, Mel shook her head. “I’ll call you later.”

Lanie’s reply was a muffled, “M’kay,” before the call disconnected.

“Strike one,” she muttered as she used her thumb to scroll through her list of contacts. “Let’s hope Harry Whitlock is awake and well-caffeinated.”

Luckily, he sounded like he was both as they exchanged the usual pleasantries, and when he asked how the Hunter training program was progressing, Mel had her opening. “Actually,” she informed him, “not as well as I would have liked.”

“Oh? Why?”

Biting back the angry retort that sprang to her lips, she decided to play dumb rather than accuse him outright. After all, she needed his help if they were going to undo whatever it was he had done. Probably best not to put him on the offensive.

“Well, it seems my illusions have a block on them.”

The coven leader let out a long, drawn-out breath and Mel could hear the squeak of his desk chair as he settled into it. “I wondered if that might become a problem. I’m sorry, Melanie,” he said, sounding sincere. “Your mother had me between a rock and a hard place.”

“I need to know what was done so that it can be fixed.”

The coven leader launched into an explanation of the spell he’d used and Mel finally stopped him. She wasn’t proficient with that sort of thing, and there was no way she’d trust herself to
